The highly anticipated AWAKEN opens the 22nd Black Nights Film Festival

A film shrouded in mystery, spanning over six years of production in 35 countries (including Estonia), AWAKEN is a daring technological feat and an immersive journey through human cultures and natural landscapes, studying man’s relationship with technology and the natural world. Director Tom Lowe, who has served as second-unit director for mentors Terrence Malick on Voyage of Time and Godfrey Reggio on Visitors, has strived to create a sweeping, grandiose cinematic feast that pushes the boundaries of existing cinematic genres.

The project has already been stirring buzz on social media and several tech sites for its pioneering cinematography and technological feats. During production, Lowe and a team from Dubai Film spent several years creating custom camera rigs and advanced motion-control robotics to move cameras in ways never before seen. Lowe adapted a gimbal to capture an astrophotography timelapse at night, from a helicopter in flight, a first in cinema history. AWAKEN’s teaser trailer, which Filmstage called “the most jaw-dropping trailer of the year”, has garnered over 7 million views on Youtube and Facebook.

The world premiere of AWAKEN will be the culminating event of the Opening Ceremony of Black Nights Film Festival, dedicated to the Estonian Republic’s 100th anniversary, taking place on the evening of 16th of November. For the premiere, AWAKEN composer Joseph Trapanese (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, Straight Outta Compton) will conduct the renowned Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and the award-winning chamber choir Voces Musicales. A limited amount of tickets to the event will be on sale starting from the 20th of September.

Tom Lowe, director of Awaken said: “We hope to electrify the nation of Estonia on November the 16th with the world premiere of AWAKEN, a film 6 years in the making. It would be impossible to find a more perfect festival for this debut. The plurality of locations and actors in our film are Estonian. I fell in love with Estonia through a camera lens and across time.”

Tiina Lokk, director of Black Nights Film Festival commented that it is a great honor to present the world premiere of an endeavour of such epic proportions. "The adventurous spirit of this kind of filmmaking is in a wonderful sync with the spirit of our festival and the fact that parts of it were filmed in Estonia will certainly add a warm feeling of recognition for our audience

A supporter of the film, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, has commented about the film on his Instagram account: “AWAKEN is an unforgettable experience and a new perspective on how we see the world around us....AWAKEN is not just a movie about the world we live in, but a celebration of the spirit of life and an exploration of the earth that we humans call home.”

There is a very limited amount of tickets to the event on sale.
