Synopsis

With its roots in government funded and censored children films in Soviet times, Latvian animation today lives as both author and studio type animated films. Most films today and in the last 10 years have been produced for adult audiences. One of the oldest studios that survived after the shift from socialist economics to capitalism is "Animācijas Brigāde". The puppet animation masters just recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Only few years ago the second most important studio in the history of Latvian animation "Dauka" closed down, today the founder of this studio Roze Stiebra is directing her feature. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the author animation slowly but persistently started to make its way to what it is today. Names like Vladimir Leschiov (Lunahod), Edmunds Jansons (AtomArt) and Signe Baumane have already sunk into the minds of animation professionals all around the world. The high artistic values and storytelling manners of Latvian animation are heavily influenced by the fact that most of today’s directors got their first education as artists specialized in various techniques. It was not possible to study animation on higher education level up until a few years ago when the Department “Motion. Image. Sound” (KAS) was founded under the Latvian Academy of Arts. The selection for Zagreb IAFF contains only short animated films from Latvia, but there are 6 features in production and that is a number we have never had on before.
