Synopsis

On New Year’s Eve a year before the change of the millennia the Russian President Boris Yeltsin surprises the world by announcing that he will resign and hand over rulership to his newly elected Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. „Putin’s Witnesses” explores how the temporary replacement became one of the world’s most powerful people and has now led Russia for decades. The director Vitaly Manskiy, who was summoned to document the new presidential candidate had a unique opportunity to get close to Putin. As a result the film shows through extraordinary footage how the complicated times provided an opportunity for a small group of people to consolidate their absolute power.
