Synopsis

On an accursed land, there is an accursed god, a god so evil his name must not be spoken, and this god’s nest is in the city of Tumbbad. The city where raining thus never stops. A place only for the greedy brave to seek for the damned riches. When a little boy Vinayak hears about the gold, he quickly figures out that he might have the answer to the riches and that he must try to trick the devil himself.  You can only imagine what is the price of that…

Opening film of the Critic’s Week Program of the prestigious Venice Film Festival, “Tumbbad” is an incredible fairy tale. Fine filmmaking and elaborate visual effects make this classic folk tale into a mesmerizing cinematic journey. Much like Estonia’s own “November” this film follows it’s own cultural narrative, but boy we have a lot to learn from, as this story of greed, is made to get under your skin and entertain.
