Synopsis

There are as many high-risk injecting drug users in Europe as there are people in Estonia. Every one of them has their own story. The film "As I Fall" by Magnus Meyer Arnesen tells us one of these.

Joachim is an addict. He is under behavioural control, he has got a job and a flat. His father and brother support him if necessary but he is still an addict. One day he gets a call from his former girlfriend who has been caught with a criminal amount of drugs. She asks Joachim to take care of their son whom he has never seen. Suddenly, the young and lonely man who is fighting his own demons becomes Lukas's father. With all the obligations and responsibilities included.

It’s an extremely honest film as the director is personally familiar with the topic. Arnesen strictly follows the rules of a realistic drama and that is the film's forte. Any experimental knack would have remarkably diminished its impact on the audience. Instead of clever tricks, the authors have used intentional style techniques to convey their message – a bluish colour scheme, silent pauses, etc.

Magnus Meyer Arensen has made an emotionally straightforward film. And that's good. When we buy a movie ticket, we usually buy emotions. But this director seems to ask us whether we’d still carry the emotions after and outside the film.
