Synopsis

Miha Mazzini is better known for his writing work and his novels are bestsellers in Slovenia. After a series of short films, Mazzini, along with cinematographer Dušan Joksimović, directed his debut feature Erased, exploring one of the unseen moments of Slovenian history.

When Ana (Judita Franković) gives birth at a local hospital everything goes fine, apart from a problem with her paperwork. Her file is absent from the system, but Ana is reassured that it’s a technical problem. Soon though, she goes through a bureaucratic hell, where she discovers that she doesn’t exist legally, even if she has always been a Slovenian citizen. All her official documents, including her I.D., social security, even home address, are invalid. She has been erased. While trying to prove her existence, Ana is struggling to keep her baby as it’s considered an orphan, ready to put up for adoption.

On 26 February 1992, Slovenia erased 25,671 citizens (1.3% of the population) most of whom were born in other former Yugoslav republics. Adapting his same-titled novel, Mazzini delivers a captivating Kafkaesque contemporary noir story that depicts the government’s absurdity which till today reigns as the majority of the citizens that ceased to “exist” are still unable to regain their legal status.
