Synopsis

Bavaria, summer of 1984. The day of mother's funeral. The funeral reception is over, the guests have left. An embittered father and his estranged son are staying behind. The father decides that it's time to tell his son the whole story – all of the memories, his entire life. The son responds with his own version of events. The contradictory history of one century – and three generations - unfolds, the rise of the Nazis and capitalism, the protagonist’s personal experiences with the Catholic Church, abuse, refugees and economic miracles.

Inspired by his own family, Josef Bierbichler's adaptation of his novel portrays around German history through a Bavarian lens and tells a very personal story within a universal context, with highly original imagery and big screen stars like Martina Gedeck. Bierbichlers legendary acting skills have been proven in works by Werner Herzog, Michael Haneke, Tom Tykwer or Caroline Link. Now both in front and behind the camera, he digs deep into the personal and collective unconscious. Timeless and masterful, this grand work also resonates within German film history, from Edgar Reitz to Herbert Achternbusch.
