Synopsis

Off the radar of mainstream American culture, the African-American roller-rink tradition has thrived for decades in cities across the country, fostering community, hosting performances by groundbreaking hip-hop artists (N.W.A., Queen Latifah), and serving as the incubator for a radical blend of skating and dance that stands as its own unique art form. Despite this remarkable history, skating is in a precarious state - re-zoning policies have led to rinks closing down and the consumerist society, dictated by whites, is replacing the rinks with Walmarts and Targets. This film is a story of a community of thousands, who give their all to fight and save an underground subculture in a racially charged environment - one that has remained undiscovered by the mainstream for generations, yet has given rise to some of the world’s greatest musical talent. It's a cultural history lesson, an investigation into racial politics, and a beautifully shot performance film.
